something that I feel a lot of neurotypicals don’t understand is that mental illness isn’t logical. “there’s no reason to be stressed, why are you anxious?” I don’t know. “why are you sad if you had a good day?” I don’t know. “why are you so irritable today?” I don’t know. “what are you feeling?” I DON’T KNOW.
“hey doc you know that anxiety? well i’ve been feeling anxious lately”
“Oh well what are you anxious about?”
WELL GEE, I DON’T KNOW

hey i need more viewpoints on this please answer if you can
can people with ADHD/ADD use the term “special interest,” even if they do not have ASD? ive seen people (mostly autistic themselves) say that its alright and i personally think so too, but one or two (also autistic) have said its not?? idk im not sure,
ive seen the term “hyperfocus” for ppl with ADHD/ADD and that seems to mean about the same thing, is that what should be used instead of “special interest” ,,i dont know??
I don’t think dividing up the terminology for concepts that similar is useful in any way.
nnnot that I hang out in add/adhd tags often and I’ll admit I haven’t checked this recently-
But I thought ‘hyperfocus’ referred to an activity and was more of an in-the-moment thing, like accidentally spending the entire day on one activity (like drawing something or building something or watching a show), sometimes to the exclusion of other activities.
Er, admittedly i’m not deeply familiar with autistic terminology, but ‘special interest’ sounds like a longer-term thing? Or interest/focus on a subject instead of an activity, in a broader sense?
Like, if i’m right in understanding this: one has special interest in a game or game series, and playing the game for hours is one way that interest is expressed/explored; one hyperfocuses when they spend 12 hours playing through a game with minimal time spent doing anything else.
If this is correct, the split terminology makes more sense to define different things (which both seem like another thing that could overlap between ADD/ADHD and autism? if I understand this right ahahaha)
